How to be prepared for fall allergies
East Tennessee’s allergy season kicks off in late February and lasts most of the year until around late November. Many people suffer in the fall. What are the fall allergens and how can you find some relief?
Ragweed and Mold
The allergens that affect the most people in the fall are ragweed and mold. If you watch the allergy forecast, you’ll notice that ragweed pollen is already at moderate levels for the beginning of September. Mold is especially prevalent in warm humid conditions so the longer this warm weather sticks around, the more likely people are to suffer. The cold weather can bring relief to both of these allergens.
Allergy symptoms
How do you know if you are suffering from seasonal allergies? Sneezing, runny nose, nasal congestion, headaches, irritated eyes, and itchy throat are all symptoms that you may have when suffering from allergies. These symptoms can be more severe in some individuals and you can experience breathing problems and migraines.
Sometimes people are unsure if they have a cold or are displaying allergy symptoms. There are certain symptoms that align more with a cold vs allergies.
Colds:
- Often display a productive or phlegmy cough
- Don’t linger
- Thick or discolored mucus
Allergies:
- Dry cough
- Rarely cause sore throats or body aches
- No fever
- Itchy, watery eyes
- Watery or clear mucus
Reducing allergy symptoms
If you see the allergy forecast and know you are likely to suffer from allergies, what are some things that you can do to reduce your reaction?
- Start with keeping your home and car free from pollen. To do this, keep your doors and windows closed.
- Try to stay indoors on days that have especially high counts. Don’t mow the yard on these days.
- When you come home for the night, take a shower to wash away the pollen on your skin and hair. By going to bed pollen free, you have a better chance of getting a good night's rest.
- Use a saline nasal wash.
- Talk to your doctor or pharmacist about what medications might be best to treat your symptoms. There are many over-the-counter options that can give you some relief.
